Description
Campanula Pritchards variety has large clustering heads of deep violet blue star shaped flowers on branching stems throughout summer. The medium green leaves are lance shaped and set off the beautiful blooms. Note that these seeds may produce pink, white or pale blue flowers as they are open pollinated.
The large clusters of flowers appear from February to May, and the plants grow to about 60 cm with a spread of about 60 cm, and the display is spectacular in the mid border of the garden, with bees and butterflies flocking to them.
This is an old cottage garden classic, and has always been appreciated for its stately elegance.
Campanula lactiflora likes sun or partial shade, in moist but well drained fertile soil. This will encourage plenty of growth and flowers.
It will retain its flower colour best in partial shade, and makes an excellent , no fuss cut flower. It will flower in its first year from seed if planted in early spring.
Sowing advice
Sow in trays or pots on a moist seed raising mix. Just press the seeds into the mix as light is needed for germination. Put a sheet of glass over the pot/tray or cover the tray with clear plastic to conserve the moisture. Keep at 20 deg C. They should germinate in 14 – 28 days . Take the cover off as soon as you see the first seedling germinate to avoid damping off .
