This plant is known commonly as Canterbury Bells. It has a large “cup ” like a bell, and a row of petals under this which form the “saucer”. It is an excellent long lasting cut flower as well as being showy in the garden. The mixture includes purple blue pink and white. It is attractive to insects and particularly bumblebees which often sleep inside the cup at nightfall. The plant will grow to about 1 metre tall.
Sowing advice for Canterbury bells
Seeds are best sown in autumn , winter or early spring . Take care, seeds are tiny. Sow in trays or pots
Press the seeds into the soil lightly. Don’t cover as light is needed for germination. Keep at 20 deg C. If the seeds do not come up within 6 to 12 weeks , seal the damp seed tray in a plastic bag and place in a fridge for about 4 weeks. They may still take very many months to appear, so do not discard the pot or tray.
