This tall basil makes an especially good cut flower . It has aromatic leaves, with hints of liquorice and mint, and florists use it as foliage or for cutting for its brilliant purple flowers. The plant has attractive purple stems and glossy two toned plum and purple leaves which have purple veins. Cooks use its sweet spicy leaves as a traditional basil in cooking. If you are using it as a cut flower , harvest it when the flowers are just forming and the stems become stiff. Cut in the cool of the evening to prevent the stems from wilting.
Sowing advice
Sow seeds in late spring after all danger of frost is past, or indoors 6 weeks before the last frost is expected, onto moist seed raising mix in pots or trays. Don’t cover the seeds as light is required for germination. Keep moist and at 22 deg.C.
