This plant has flat saucers made up of myriads of little star shaped flowers, which rise on tall strong red stems well above the plant. It flowers non stop through summer and autumn until the first frost. It forms a mound of large finely toothed ferny mid green leaves. It is an easily grown plant which adapts to most situations, and persists well through the seasons in the garden. It can be used for a specimen plant or in the border, and is attractive too bees and butterflies. It will grow in full sun or part shade. It received the Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.
It makes a good cut flower.
Sowing advice
Sow in autumn and early spring in pots or trays on the surface of good sterilised seed raising mix. Cover with just a sprinkle of soil as light is required for germination. Keep constantly damp , but dont waterlog the seeds and maintain a constant temperature of 20 deg C. Germination can be erratic, and sometimes takes up to 50 days. Once the seeds have germinated keep them at cooler temperatures.
Transplant to individual pots as soon as the seedlings can be handled, as the long tap root is sensitive to disturbance.
